Chapter Thirteen
Mack
It’s decided.
There’s not much fanfare, not even much debate, the vote lands with solemnity and, the second it’s decided, the feeling that a terrible violence is hanging over every one of us descends over the room.
During the vote, Brewer — my brother, my friend, a man with which I’ve butted heads on more than one occasion — stands up and echoes the sentiment that I spilled out before the assembled MC not minutes earlier: we can save an innocent woman and her child from falling into the hands of a sickening monster and, if we ever want to call ourselves real men again, we have only one course of action: we shelter them, and we spill as much blood as we have to to make sure they never return to the nightmare in their past.
I’ve never felt such a storm of emotion at a vote. Never felt such a thrill when saying ‘Aye’, never felt such fear, either.
We all know this won’t end easy. Blood waits for us in our future, and we’ll be lucky if it doesn’t drown us all.
Around a beat-up table, full of knicks and gouges, my family sits quiet. Though we’re all silent, every one of us wears our hearts on our sleeves; Razor, Trips, and Rusty all look resolute, determined, itching for war. They’re young, they live to put their lives on the line defending their home and their family. Even Razor and Rusty, both of whom have seen their families grow in recent months, show unwavering determination.
I love these lads.
Brewer, Sarge, Stitch, and Snake all show the caution that comes with age. Blaze looks eager. Ready. Like he’s been waiting his entire life for the chance to leap into the fiery storm of violence that’s about to engulf Lone Mesa.
“About time,” he mouths as the voting proceeds around the table and the motion looks certain to pass.
Brewer nods at me as he says the final, unanimous ‘Aye’ to support defending Sophia and Matyas. I’ve had plenty of reasons to hate him over the years, but I’ll never forget this.
“It’s decided,” Stone says. His eyes drift over the room before settling on me. “It’s difficult doing the right thing sometimes, and this is the instance that proves that rule. There’s not any doubt in my mind that this is the right call — it would be unconscionable to turn over a woman and child to the Bratva — but I doubt we’ve ever faced a challenge like the one that’s waiting for us out there.”
“It doesn’t fucking matter who it is, Prez, they will end up just like those dead brained Makris motherfuckers. This is our home, we can’t allow anyone to come in here and pull off any kind of shit like this, it’s a matter of self-respect.”
I laugh. I can’t help it, Blaze’s eagerness is infectious and I can’t wait to be beside him, tearing into those Bratva bastards. “Come on, brother. We all know it’s not just self-respect. You want a chance to kick some Russian ass.
